A Free OFX Film Emulation Plugin That Does the Whole Look

A convincing film look is never just one thing. It’s color, grain, glow around the highlights, a little softness, and the tiny instabilities of a real projector. The SyF Film Emulation Pro is a free OFX film emulation plugin for Vegas Pro that puts all of it in one effect, in three clear sections, so you can build the look from the stock up instead of stacking five different plugins.

Grain It

Choose between Basic and Perlin grain, set the Quality to Fast while you work and Beautiful for the final render, then shape it with Strength, Scale, and Softness. The grain re-randomizes every frame, so it moves like real film grain instead of sitting still on the picture, even on a still image. A Seed control lets you pick a different pattern.

Emulate It

This is where the film look comes from. The Film Stock dropdown gives you 12 looks in two families, TV and Cinematic. Each comes in Kodak and Fuji styles, and each in Warm, Neutral, and Cool versions. An Intensity slider blends the stock in and out. Then add the character of film:

• Bloom / Halation: a soft glow that spreads from the brightest highlights.
• Overall Softness: takes the digital edge off the whole image.
• Highlight Softness: softens only the bright areas.
• Flicker: subtle frame-to-frame brightness variation.
• Gate Weave: the small random shifts of film moving through a projector gate.
• Legalize Levels: maps computer RGB (0 to 255) to studio RGB (16 to 235) when your delivery needs it.

Colorize It

Finish the look with Temperature, Saturation, and Contrast, plus Bleach Bypass for the desaturated, high-contrast look of skipped-bleach film processing. Add a vignette with adjustable strength and shape, and a touch of chromatic aberration for the color fringing at the edges of the frame that real lenses produce. The grain is applied before the vignette, so the vignette darkens it the way it would on real film.

GPU-Accelerated, With a Real Fallback Chain

The main render tries an NVIDIA CUDA device first, falls back to OpenCL for any other GPU, and only drops to the CPU if neither is available. It stays fast on the widest range of machines, not just one brand of graphics card. One checkbox turns GPU acceleration off.

Host Software: Vegas Pro 15+ (Recommended). Works in 8-bit and 32-bit floating point projects.

Run the installer.
(Note for Windows Users: As an indie developer, you may see a blue SmartScreen warning upon installation. Click “More Info” -> “Run Anyway” to install.)

Open Vegas Pro and navigate to the Video FX tab. Under the Scrapyard Films Plugins! group, you’ll see:
